If you are selling, trading in or giving away an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or MacBook, wiping the screen with your sleeve and putting it back in the box is not quite enough.
Your Apple device may contain photos, messages, passwords, banking details, emails and other personal information. It can also remain linked to your Apple Account through Find My and Activation Lock. If that link is not removed correctly, the next owner may be unable to set the device up at all.

Start by backing up anything you want to keep
Before deleting anything, make sure your important information is safely backed up or transferred to your new device.
For an iPhone or iPad, you can use iCloud Backup or connect the device to a Mac or Windows PC and create a local backup. If you already have your replacement device, Apple’s Quick Start feature can transfer your apps, photos, settings and other information directly.
For a MacBook, use Time Machine with an external drive or copy important files to secure cloud storage. Check folders such as Desktop, Documents and Downloads, along with any locally stored photos, music or work files.
Apple Watch information is normally backed up to the paired iPhone when the watch is unpaired.
Do not manually delete your photos, contacts or documents one by one while you are still signed into iCloud. Those deletions may sync to your other Apple devices as well. Back up first, then use the proper erase process.
How to prepare an iPhone or iPad for sale
1. Unpair your Apple Watch first
If an Apple Watch is paired with the iPhone you are selling, unpair the watch before erasing the phone. This creates a fresh backup of the watch and allows it to be paired with your new iPhone.
2. Sign out of your Apple Account
On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name at the top and choose Sign Out. You may be asked for your Apple Account password so Find My and Activation Lock can be removed.
Apple ID is now called Apple Account, although many people still know it as their iCloud or Apple ID login.
3. Erase all content and settings
Go to:
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad > Erase All Content and Settings
Follow the onscreen instructions and enter the device passcode or Apple Account password if requested. If the device uses an eSIM, choose to erase the eSIM as well when selling it. Remove any physical SIM card before handing the device over.
When the process is complete, the iPhone or iPad should restart at the Hello setup screen. Do not continue through the setup—leave that for the new owner.
If you are moving from iPhone to an Android phone, remember to deregister iMessage so you do not miss text messages sent to your mobile number.
How to prepare an Apple Watch for sale
The best way to erase an Apple Watch and remove Activation Lock is to unpair it from the iPhone it is currently connected to.
Keep the iPhone and Apple Watch close together, then:
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch.
- Choose Unpair Apple Watch.
- If it is a cellular model, remove the mobile plan if you are selling the watch.
- Enter your Apple Account password when asked.
Unpairing erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. Simply resetting the watch directly from its own Settings menu does not always remove the link to your Apple Account.
If you no longer have the paired iPhone, erase the Apple Watch and then remove it from your account through icloud.com/find. Make sure it no longer appears as locked to you before the buyer collects it.
How to prepare a MacBook for sale
Newer MacBooks make this fairly simple. On a compatible Mac running macOS Monterey or later, go to:
Apple menu > System Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
The erase assistant will guide you through signing out of your Apple Account, removing Find My and securely deleting your personal data.
Erase All Content and Settings is available on Macs with Apple silicon and Macs fitted with Apple’s T2 Security Chip. If the option is not available, the Mac will need to be erased through macOS Recovery instead. On an older MacBook you should:
- Back up your files.
- Sign out of iCloud and iMessage.
- Start the Mac in macOS Recovery.
- Use Disk Utility to erase the internal drive.
- Reinstall macOS.
Once macOS has reinstalled and the setup assistant appears, stop there and shut the Mac down. The new owner can then complete the setup using their own details.
The exact recovery steps vary by Mac model and macOS version, so take care before erasing the drive. If you are unsure, it is better to ask for help than accidentally wipe the only copy of your files.
Check that Find My and Activation Lock are removed
Find My is Apple’s tracking service. Activation Lock is the security feature that prevents somebody else from activating a lost or stolen device. It is excellent protection—but it also means a genuine buyer cannot use a device that is still attached to the previous owner’s Apple Account.
After erasing the device, check your device list at icloud.com/find. If the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or MacBook is still listed, select it and choose Remove This Device when that option is available.
Never give a buyer your Apple Account password. You should remove the device from your account yourself.
A final check before handing it over
Before the sale is completed:
- Make sure the device reaches the Hello or initial setup screen.
- Remove the SIM card and erase any eSIM being transferred or cancelled.
- Remove saved cards from Apple Pay if they have not already been removed during the reset.
- Clean the device carefully and include the correct charger or accessories if agreed.
- Be honest about any damage, replaced parts or faults.
- Record the serial number or IMEI on your receipt.
- Keep proof of the sale and remove the device from your insurance or mobile account if necessary.
